Q - How long can the bands be worn on my dog? A - First, please keep in mind that nothing should be worn on your dog for a long period of time. Belly bands are a TRAINING AID. We recommend placing sanitary pads inside the belly bands and replacing them continuously with dry ones once he urinates in them. Leaving bands on your dog for an extended period of time could cause belly sores or urinary tract infections.
Q - How do I train my dog to keep the bands on? A - Some dogs adapt to the bands very quickly and some will do anything to get them off. The key is persistence. Place the band on him and quickly praise him, or reward with a treat. Say “Good boy!” every time the band goes on. When he tries to rub on the furniture to get it off or tries biting it to get the band off, be strict, and say “NO!” every time he does this. For stubborn dogs you may have to do this a lot. Try to distract him - have him fetch a ball, or play with a squeaky toy. Train him to relate the belly band to something fun and something positive.
Q - What kind of sanitary pads do you recommend? A - We recommend women’s basic sanitary pads, such as Kotex, Always, Poise, etc. Wal-mart carries the generic brand “Equate” and they work perfectly fine. Just remember to purchase UNSCENTED pads, as your dog may have an allergic reaction to the perfumes in scented ones. Tip: If you buy “long” pads you may be able to cut them in half and get twice the usage out of a package.
